COMMUNITY – BASED TOURISM AT WORK
The Kim Bong village Community Based Tourism Project is a joint initiative of Kim Bong Village and Tourism Service Cooperative, Cam Kim People Committee, Hoian Commerce & Tourism Division and Quang Nam Tourism Department, with technical assistance from the International Trade Center
The initiative ensures that the benefit from their traditional crafts and tourism are managed and shared by the villagers themselves. The newly-formed village cooperative manages the Craft Centre, bike trail, guided tours and crafts selling, so that the money collected helps to improve the livelihood of the entire community.
KIM BONG – A VILLAGE TO BE EXPLORED
A scenic fifteen – minute boat ride across the Thu Bon River brings you to Kim Bong in Cam Kim commune. The village gained its illustrious reputation thanks to the generations of artisans who produce various wooden products. Other traditional crafts that flourish in the village include bamboo work, the production of colorful reed mats, silk handbags.
This lush and fertile village sits astride a network of river channels. Originally, Kim Bong was surrounded by three separate rivers, but to day these channels have joined into the Thu Bon river.
Legend has it that in the 15th century, Kim Bong was found by four high- ranking officers of Le Loi King. They fell in love with the area and settled, bringing with them their wood working skills. These officers set the foundation for Kim Bong’s most notable families, Huynh, Nguyen, Phan and Truong, whose descendants still work in the village workshops today.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO
It all depends on how much time you have to spend in Kim Bong. A half to full day tour gives an authentic feel of daily life in this sprawling village, and an opportunity to learn and admire the skillful processes of the wood artisans. Even a one-hour tour give a good introduction to Kim Bong’s main attractions
Village bike trail
Escorted by a local guide, a two or there –hour bike trail is an interesting way to explores the famous carpentry workshop and shipbuilding area. While enjoying the beautiful landscapes, your guide will teach you about the village life and take you to visit the ancient houses, temples, and especially, the famous Kim Buu pagoda, all set in an un-spoilt and peaceful atmosphere.
Village walking tour
There are several different options for a walking tour. Within one to two hours, you can wander around inner Kim Bong and along its river banks. The local guide will introduce you to interesting activities , such as shipbuilding, carpentry, mat weaving and visit the island’s only coracle boat maker.
Visiting the riverside area is an interesting option for those who have less time ( Min. one hour). The craft center and the showroom exhibit all the traditional skills and different crafts employed in Kim Bong together with information about its history, traditions, fauna and flora.
In Kim Bong village, you can choose skillfully carved wooden statuettes for your home decoration or order tailor-made furniture to be packaged and shipped back to your home country. You can also visit the small but bustling market or simply look at the hand-bag shop.
