Catu Traditional Textile Assistance Project
Challenge For Smiles
FY2008 – FY2011
Zara village and neighboring villages, Tabhing commune*, Nam Giang district, Quang Nam province
Handicraft activities have been implemented as one component of Nam Giang Community Development Project (FY2001-FY2007) for income generation of Catu women in Zara village. During the project, the Catu women significantly improved their weaving skills and became able to produce new products with their improvement of traditional beads motif. These handcraft products have reached to souvenir shops in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Hoi An where are Vietnam’s major tourist destinations. Meantime, the Catu women have gained self -confidence via their work and interaction.
Due to the lack of production capacity, however, neither the quality nor the quantity of the products were not stable.
To promote traditional weaving handicraft, and Catu women will be able to earn stable income.
